Fr. Bernard’s Easter Message

Dear Parishioners

Last month I visited Goa, India, to commemorate my mom’s third death anniversary. Traditionally the graves are the property of the parish and are not privately owned. Every third year the remains are exhumed, and the parish recycles the grave for the newly deceased. After the third year of the burial, you can either purchase a niche carved out into the wall of the cemetery and save the remains into it or reverently place the remains in the central well of the cemetery. As we were in the process of doing this ritual, I was struck with the same theological question “What happens to the body after our death?” Without an iota of doubt the truth of the RESURRECTION comes alive as an answer.

We are at the threshold of the Glorious Easter season. We are filled with joy and gratitude because Resurrection is the foundation of our faith. The risen Lord mainfests God’s power over death and gives us hope for eternal life. The resurrection of Jesus is an irrefutable proof that was attested to by so many eyewitnesses, and many have died for this truth of faith.

In the Catholic Church, Jubilee years are traditionally observed every 25th year. Now in 2025, the theme of this Jubilee year is “Pilgrims of Hope”. This theme encourages us to hope in the promise of Christ as we walk the pilgrimage of life. In John 11:25 Jesus says, “I am the resurrection and the life, whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live.” Every Easter Jesus challenges us with these words which were spoken to Martha after the death of Lazarus and calls on us to be pilgims of hope of our own Resurrection.

May the Risen Lord bless you and your family and may you be “pilgrims of Hope.”

On Behalf of Fr. Eliseo, Deacons Dance and Craig, I wish you a Happy Easter.

Fr. Bernard

Why is the Pope wearing red in his coffin? Is it new that he’s being buried outside the Vatican? Pope Francis’s death comes with changes, many of which he made. He wanted to simplify his funeral, although not everything has changed.

The Pope Video

In his prayer intention for the month of March, Pope Francis invites us to pray for families in crisis, and to reflect on the importance of forgiveness: “Forgiveness means giving another chance. God does this with us all the time.”

In this video, produced by the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network, the Pope tells us that “each person” in the family “is unique,” but that “differences can also cause conflict.” He adds that to heal wounds, forgiveness is key, “even when there’s no possibility of the ‘happy ending’ we’d like.”

Through this intention, let’s together pray that broken families might experience the healing of their wounds through forgiveness, rediscovering each other’s gifts even in their differences.

“We all dream about a beautiful, perfect family. But there’s no such thing as a perfect family.

Every family has its own problems, as well as its tremendous joys. Every member of the family is important because each member is different than the others, each person is unique. But these differences can also cause conflict and painful wounds.

And the best medicine to heal the pain of a wounded family is forgiveness. Forgiveness means giving another chance. God does this with us all the time. God’s patience is infinite. He forgives us, lifts us up, gives us a new start.

Forgiveness always renews the family, making it look forward with hope.

Even when there’s no possibility of the “happy ending” we’d like, God’s grace gives us the strength to forgive, and it brings peace, because it frees us from sadness, and, above all, from resentment.

Let us pray that broken families might discover the cure for their wounds through forgiveness, rediscovering each other’s gifts, even in their differences.”

Introducing Radiate Love

Your Mission, Should You Choose to Accept It… In families, husbands and wives marry in love, then see their love deepen through the myriad good times and challenges of a lifetime of marriage. The mission of the family is not for the fainthearted. It entails sacrifice and sometimes heartache, but all of that is meant to bring spouses closer together and further along the path to holiness. If they are blessed to become parents, they are tasked with teaching their children how to be human. What a concept! RCIA:  An Invitation to Satisfy Our Deepest Longing

The human heart seems ultimately to manifest itself in the desire to be loved and to love in return.  Until then, as St. Augustine said, our hearts are restless until they rest in God who is Love.  As Catholic Christians, we are privileged to share God’s love through Mass, the Sacraments and how we live our life.

Do you know someone thirsting for God?   Do you know someone not baptized or baptized in a different Christian tradition thirsting to know what it means to be Catholic?  Do you know someone already Catholic but who has not yet received the Eucharist or been confirmed?  They may be thirsting, too.The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a place to ask questions and seek understanding.  Weekly “no strings” inquiry gatherings will be held at 7 pm on Tuesday evenings beginning in September.  We would love for you to invite/accompany anyone you know whose heart is restless for the God who loves them.

For more information, please contact Liz McGee (707-599-6138) or contact the rectory office. stbshrcia25@gmail.com.

Scam alert!

Recently, some parishioners have reported receiving requests for gift cards from Fr. Bernard or Fr. Rowell or Bishop Vasa. This type of thing is always a scam. Priests would not request gift cards from parishioners, let alone indirectly through email. They would ask directly for volunteer work. Always disregard this type of indirect request, especially for money or gift cards from priests as being a scam.

Each day the Daily Jolt will offer a brief daily insight/inspiration and will also contain a “microChallenge” asking readers to take that moment of mindfulness and turn it into some small, immediate form of action in their lives. Our spiritual journeys are all unique and incredibly personal, but that doesn’t mean we don’t need a little Jolt from time to time to keep the journey moving forward. Don’t worry, this isn’t a test! How to Obtain a Plenary Indulgence During the 2025 Jubilee

The Vatican has detailed how to obtain plenary indulgences — removing temporal punishment for sin through Christ’s merits — during the 2025 Jubilee Year

Requirements: detachment from sin (even venial), confession within about 20 days, Communion, and prayer for the Pope’s intentions (e.g., an Our Father and Hail Mary). Each indulgence requires a separate Communion and prayer, ideally on the day of the indulgenced act. Only one plenary indulgence can be obtained per day, but a second is possible if applied to souls in purgatory.

Ways to obtain the indulgence can be found by clicking the link below
